How to Prepare for Your Photoshoot (Without the Pressure)

If you’ve booked a session with me, first of all, thank you. I don’t take it lightly when families trust me to capture their most important memories. How to prepare for your photoshoot
But I also know that booking a session can bring a little pressure with it. What should we wear? What if the kids melt down? What if I feel awkward? I hear this all the time, and I want to gently remind you, it’s okay. You don’t need to be perfect. Your kids don’t need to “perform.” And your session shouldn’t feel stressful.
So here’s a soft and simple guide to help you feel ready, calm, and even a little excited about your shoot.
Let’s Talk About the Kids how to prepare for your photoshoot
The best thing you can do is set them up with the right expectations, but in a fun way. Instead of saying, “We’re going to have photos taken so you need to behave,” try something like:
“We’re going on a little adventure and someone is going to take photos of us all playing and cuddling together.”
Reassure them that it’s not about sitting still or smiling on command. It's about being with you. Laughing, exploring, cuddling, dancing - being themselves.
And if they’re nervous, you can even show them some of my photos ahead of time so they know what to expect. Let them know I’m just a friendly face with a camera who’s here to have fun with them.

Bribes Are Welcome (Seriously)
Bring a little surprise for after the session - a small toy, a lollipop, a sticker book. Something that makes them feel like they’ve done something special.
Better yet? Plan to grab takeout or go out for ice cream after. Turning the day into a treat helps make the photos feel like part of a happy memory, not just a task to check off. For my photos with my girls, we headed out to Kmart together, they got to pick one item each, up to $20 and they got their chosen thing after the shoot. (surprisingly, they didn't pick items $20 each, one was $12 and the other was $10). We packed them in the car and they got to hold them, still in their boxes and they loved getting them straight after our shoot.
Choosing Outfits Without the Overwhelm
If you haven’t already read my What to Wear Guide, it’s a great place to start. Here’s the short version:
Go for soft, neutral tones and earthy colours (they photograph beautifully)
Avoid logos and loud patterns
Textures like knits, linen, or lace add subtle depth
Choose clothes that feel like you—comfortable and timeless
And remember: you have access to my curated client wardrobe, especially helpful for maternity and newborn sessions. I’m more than happy to help style you and your family, just send through what you’re thinking and we’ll work it out together.
Let the Kids Be Kids
If they’re running around, being silly, or even a bit shy, that’s okay. I’m a mum too, and I promise I’ll meet your children exactly where they’re at.
Some of the most beautiful moments happen in the in-between.So please don’t worry if your child is bouncing with energy or refusing to smile. We’ll make magic out of whatever they give us.
Think Ahead to Make the Day Easier
Lay out outfits the night before so you’re not scrambling in the morning
Pack snacks and water (especially for toddlers!)
Leave a little earlier than you think so you’re not rushed arriving
Try to clear your schedule so you’re not jumping from one thing to the next
Treat it like a special day—because it is
These moments we’re capturing? They’ll outlive the chaos, the mess, and the nerves. And they’ll mean everything to you someday.
And Finally… Just Breathe
Your session isn’t about perfection, it’s about presence. Come as you are. Trust the process. Let your kids be themselves. Let yourself be seen.
I’ll guide you the whole way, and I’ll capture what matters most: the real, raw, beautiful love that makes your family yours.
With love,
Nicole
