What to Wear for Your Photoshoot: Feel Beautiful, Be You

One of the most common questions I get asked before a session is: "What should we wear?"

And I get it, choosing outfits can feel overwhelming when you're already juggling family life, schedules, and nerves about being in front of the camera. But the truth is, your outfits don’t need to be perfect. They just need to feel like you. Comfortable, flattering, and true to the mood you want to capture.

Here’s my gentle guide to take the stress out of styling and help you walk into your shoot feeling calm, confident, and beautiful.

Go Neutral, Go Timeless

When in doubt, choose earthy tones, muted neutrals, soft pastels, and natural fabrics. These colours photograph beautifully and keep the focus on connection—on you—not just your clothes.

Think: beige, oatmeal, dusty pink, warm tan, soft olive, linen whites. These tones feel timeless, work in any location, and bring a sense of softness to your photos.

Avoid the Loud Stuff

Try to steer clear of bold patterns, loud logos, and bright neon colours. Logos can work well if you're going for a set theme or branding, but they tend to distract from the emotion and story we're trying to tell. This doesn’t mean boring, textures like lace, knits, linen, or embroidery add beautiful visual depth without stealing the show.

Comfort > Perfection

Your photos will feel most like you when you feel good in what you’re wearing. Choose pieces that let you move, hug your babies, twirl, sit in the grass, and breathe freely. Flowy dresses, oversized knits, or well-loved denim are perfect.

Compliment, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of matching jeans and white shirts. Instead, choose colours that compliment one another, different shades of similar tones, or variations in texture and fabric. I often help families coordinate without being too “matchy.”

If you’re unsure, send me what you’ve got, I’m always happy to help.

Use My Curated Client Wardrobe

I’ve created a small but beautiful collection of outfits available to all my clients, especially helpful for maternity and newborn sessions. These pieces have been chosen to photograph beautifully, flatter all body types, and suit my editing style.

You're welcome to borrow any items from my wardrobe at no extra cost, just let me know what you love, and I’ll have them ready on the day. And if you're not a client of mine, you can hire them for a fraction of their retail price. www.thephotographerswardrobe.com

Final Tip: Let Go of Perfection

Please don’t overthink it. The most meaningful images often come from the in-between moments, your toddler tugging at your dress, that quiet laugh between you and your partner, your newborn curled into you. Those are the memories we’re capturing.

Wear what makes you feel beautiful, and I’ll take care of the rest.

Need More Styling Help?

I’m always just a message away if you need guidance. And if you’re booked in with me, you'll receive a thorough what to wear for your photoshoot session guide and help you piece together looks that feel true to you and your family. If you're not a client of mine, reach out to your photographer and request one. They should have one or something for you.

And remember, you deserve to feel as beautiful as the love you’re surrounded by.

Warmly,Nicole 🤍
